Monologue part 1

This is a link to the monologue and the terms of use, stating that I am allowed to use this monologue as long as I am not receiving money for performing it- http://notmyshoes.net/monologues/carla.html

This was my time reading through my monologue when on camera. This monologue is my style of acting because I prefer doing something a little more of a dramatic monologue than something that is comedy or light hearted.
The synopsis of the monologue is that the character I am playing, Carla, is a therapist who is talking to a young girl called Jessie. Carla is unsympathetic to Jessie about her suicide attempt and this is what her response is to hearing Jessie's story.
I sent the videos to my partner, who is running the theatre company with me and asked her for some advice on how I can improve it when I do my next run through:

Video 1:
I liked how you spoke it but maybe try and be more forceful with some of the words you say? Is the camera the person? If so, try and get closer to the camera and be more menacing. I’m not sure what the character is to the main character? From it, I get that you’re depressed and miserable and trying to manipulate the character into thinking that she shouldn’t commit.
Video 2:
Again, I liked how you spoke it, especially with the ending ‘just snap out of it’. Is the therapist crazy because some of the things she is saying doesn’t sound like something a normal therapist would say.
Overall, after watching them myself, I am going to tone down my voice and make sure that I am speaking almost in a low tone to make the character sound even more unsympathetic towards Jessie. I am also going to learn the lines so I am not looking at the paper all the time because this is taking away the effect of the monologue when I cannot look at the camera.

Doing this monologue is going to help my business because my partner is able to do more comedic styles, with her talent show piece that she did in our class in Performing Arts, whereas I am more comfortable doing something that is more dramatic and serious. This means we have a good balance for the students who want to do acting and we are going to be able to look at different styles instead of staying with classic monologues.
